Level UP!: Get a Grip
How Wheels and Durometer can change your game
When it comes to roller derby, your wheels are your connection to the track. (Literally… It goes track, then wheels…) They play a crucial role in your agility, stability, and overall skating performance. But with a variety of wheel hardnesses on the market, actually called durometer (that’s the unit used to measure this), choosing the right wheels can feel overwhelming.
This post will guide you through the basics of derby wheels and durometer options, helping you choose the perfect setup for YOU!
Grip vs. Slide: The Hardness Breakdown
Wheel hardness is measured on a durometer scale, typically ranging from 78A (softest) to 101A (hardest).
Here's a basic rundown of how hardness translates to performance:
Softer Wheels (78A-88A): Imagine these as your grippy, sticky friends. They provide excellent traction on slick surfaces like polished concrete or old gym floors. This makes them ideal for beginners or skaters who prefer a more controlled feel. The downside? Softer wheels can roll slower and may not be the best choice for super sticky tracks.
Medium Wheels (90A-93A): These are the all-rounders. They offer a good balance of grip and roll, making them a versatile choice for a variety of track conditions. They're a great option for skaters who are developing their skills and want wheels that can handle most situations.
Hard Wheels (94A-101A): Get ready to slide! Harder wheels offer less grip but provide more speed and allow for power slides and controlled stops. These are ideal for experienced skaters who want to take advantage of a stickier track or perfect their derby skills.
Finding Your Perfect Match: Factors to Consider
Choosing your wheel hardness goes beyond just the durometer.
Here are some additional factors to keep in mind:
Track Surface: As mentioned earlier, consider the type of track you'll be skating on. Slicker surfaces demand softer wheels, while stickier tracks benefit from harder wheels.
(Anyone who has skated on a track that feels like wet sand … I’m looking at you Rodeo City Roller Derby … can tell you, wheels can be a game changer.)
Skating Style: Are you a Jammer? Blocker? Pivot? Bambi? or Jack of all trades??? Ask yourself, do you prefer a grippy and controlled feel, or are you looking for more speed and agility?
Skater Weight: Heavier skaters naturally get more grip, so they might opt for slightly harder wheels compared to lighter skaters.

Beyond Durometer: Don't Forget Your Teammates!
Remember, you have a community within your team. Chat with your fellow skaters about their wheel preferences and track experiences. Look to those who play similar positions, or how similar skating styles or body types. Sharing knowledge helps everyone.
Bonus Tip: Don't be afraid to experiment! Trying different wheel durometers is a great way to eff around and find out figure out what works best for you. Talk to your local derby shop (if you have one) or experienced teammates for recommendations on specific wheel brands sizes, ect.
With the right wheels under your feet, you'll be ready to conquer any challenge the track throws your way.
